Why We Remain Faithful In Our Relationship

Most of us remain faithful in a relationship or just date one person because we choose to. That’s exactly how most of us look at fidelity – it is a choice. Aside from it being a choice, we also have other reasons why we are committed to being faithful.

Debunking Why We Choose To Remain Faithful

Menelaos Apostelou and Rafaella Panayiotou of the University of Nicosia in Cyprus decided to do research on why people don’t cheat. Both interview 40 men and women about why a person wants to remain faithful. Eliminating duplicate answers, they narrowed it down to 47 reasons. They needed to narrow it down so they got 600 new participants to narrow down the 47 reasons. The top three are:

1. They are satisfied with their relationship.

You’re least likely to cheat if you feel happy and contented in your relationship. It may not be 100% happy all of the time, but you and your significant other fix your issues and then move forward, stronger and more mature. Relationships aren’t perfect, but you know that issues can still be worked on so you remain contented.

2. They do not want to feel guilty.

Guilt is such a hard feeling to bear. In fact, not a lot of people can stand feeling guilty all the time. Because many understand that the feeling of guilt comes with cheating, they would rather remain faithful.

3. It could lead to retaliatory infidelity.

Lastly, a lot of couples in the research were afraid that their spouse might cheat in order to retaliate. Hypothetically, although they have done the deed already, they don’t want to go through the pain of finding out that their partner cheated because they did it first.

Remain Faithful And Work On Your Relationship

Whatever your reason is for staying faithful to your significant other, keep it up. We should all be working on the first item on the list – making sure that our partner is contented. Of course, we cannot force someone to be content, but we can do everything we can to ensure that our relationship is in a good place. How To Offer Support During A Stressful Time

When the person you are dating or your partner is undergoing a stressful time in his or her life, you have to offer support in the right way. In most cases, we don’t really know how to do this. Most of us are afraid that we might say something incorrect or we might trigger a negative reaction out of our partner.

Offer Support And Alleviate Your Partner Anxiety

The support you offer your partner during his or her time of need is very important. Your loved one may have good coping mechanisms for stress, but you can alleviate his or her anxiety faster if you know exactly what to do. You would want him or her to do the same if you are going through a tough time.

1. Let them know that you are aware.

You have to let your partner know that you are aware of the tough time they are going through. Acknowledge it. To do this, you don’t have to know the full story. You just have to tell your partner something like, “I know that you are having a tough time right now. I’m here for you if you need me.”

2. Offer to help.

Your partner may or may not be willing to share the full story with you at this point. Don’t worry about it. He or she will share it when the time is right. Just extend a helping hand. What do you think can you do to make your partner feel better? If you don’t know exactly, then ask: “What can I do to help or make you feel better?”

3. Be open to change.

Most likely, whether your partner is experiencing stress because of work or family, things are bound to change. Be open to it. It might be a change in your routine or a change in your partner’s workplace. Accept it to support your partner.

Offer Support The Right Way For A Happier Relationship

If you support your partner the right way, he or she will be happier in your relationship. At the same time, your partner will be encouraged to reciprocate the support when it’s your turn to need it. For more updates and tips to improve your relationship, read other posts on the blog.
