Russian-American Celebrities You Didn’t Know About

Surprisingly, you’ll find plenty of Russian-American celebrities in Hollywood. They may not look like they have Russian blood in them. In fact, you’ll be surprised at some of the personalities you’ll find on this list because you would never have guessed that they’re celebrities with Russian heritage. Full-blooded or not, it is still fun to know which Hollywood celebs have Russian roots.

This list is composed of celebrities with Russian heritage. They could be actors or actresses who have appeared in big movies that have Russian descent. They may or may not be famous Russian Americans.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio

This multi-awarded actor’s last name sounds like his has some Italian in him. True, but what many don’t know is that his grandmother was Russian. Her name was Yelena Smirnova, and she was his grandmother on his mother’s side. Who would have thought that he one of the many Russian-American celebrities in Hollywood?

2. Pamela Anderson

The bombshell actress grew up not knowing she had Russian roots. She and her family always thought that they had Dutch roots, but her mother found out years ago that Anderson’s grandmother was Russian and not Dutch.

3. Joaquin Phoenix

Here’s another surprising actor on this list of Russian-American celebrities – Joaquin Phoenix. His name doesn’t have any hint of Russian in it. However, his family discovered that his mother, Arlyn Pheonix, came from a Jewish family of Russian and Hungarian immigrants.

4. Helen Mirren

Everyone knows that Helen Mirren is English. Her real name, however, is Yelena Vasiliyevna Mironov. Her mother was English, and her father was Russian. On her father’s side, her grandfather was part of the Russian Army as a colonel.

5. Amanda Bynes

Before the controversial incidents these past years, Amanda Bynes was regarded is an all-around American girl. But, her father is actually of Irish and Polish descent while her mother is from an Ashkenazi (Russian-Jewish) family.


6. James Franco

Yes, believe or not, James Franco is in this Russian-American celebrities list. His mother is of Russian-Jewish descent, while his father was of Portuguese and Swedish descent.


7. Harrison Ford

The Star Wars actor has some Russian in him on his mother’s side. His father was of Irish and German ancestry, while his grandparents on his mother’s side were Jewish immigrants from Minsk, Belarus. So he’s like a quarter-Russian.


8. Milla Jovovich

Milla Jovovich is perhaps one of the most famous Russian-American celebrities in Hollywood. She was born in born in Kiev, Russia, to a Russian mother and a Serbian father. Her last name kind of gives it away, but it’s a wonder why she didn’t become a Russian celebrity .


9. Mila Kunis

It’s surprising that many don’t realize Mila Kunis’ Russian roots. Her beautiful face hints it, and she has appeared on countless talk shows where she speaks fluent Russian. She is one of the many Russian-American Celebrities who is a Russian Jewish immigrant, born in Ukrainian SSR.

10. Natalie Portman

Natali Portman, another multi-talented actress from Hollywood, is an American -Israeli. She, however, has Russian roots on her mother’s side. Her maternal grandparents were part of Jewish families who migrated to the United States from Austria and Russia.
